"(Lipo-) Sculpting the future: Innovations in reconstructive surgery"
Breast Reconstruction After Amputation is an Important Part of Physical and Emotional Recovery for Many Women. In plastic and reconstructive surgery, innovation is essential to continuously improve this care and better align it with the patient's needs.
In my inaugural lecture, I discuss the development of a new technique: lipofilling, which involves using fat tissue from the patient's own body to reconstruct a breast. This method not only provides a natural result but also contributes to the restoration of sensation in the breast. In Maastricht, we have studied this process in the BREAST study, which has led to national recognition of lipofilling as a legitimate reconstructive option.
However, innovation does not stop at technique. Equally important is listening to the patient: what does she want, what fits her body and life? In my lecture, I reflect on the journey that has brought us here and look ahead to the possibilities that lie before us in this rapidly evolving field.
