Cosimo Monda

Cosimo Monda is the Director of the Maastricht European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity (ECPC), which has been established in 2016 at the Law Faculty, Maastricht University.

At ECPC his work has a strong European and international outlook in the field of privacy and cybersecurity, steering an interdisciplinary group of researchers, academics and professionals active in areas of fundamental rights, data privacy, transparency and confidentiality, IT, data security, and more. Cosimo Monda has a longstanding experience in designing executive education, certification courses and online learning modules for professionals who are required to deal with new regulations and on-going developments in the privacy and cybersecurity market.

Advocate General Szpunar

Mr Szpunar was appointed as an Advocate General at the Court of Justice on 23 October 2013 and has held the position of First Advocate General since 11 October 2018.

He was Undersecretary of State in the Office of the Committee for European Integration (Poland) from 2008 to 2009, before joining the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2013. During those three years, he represented the Polish government as an agent in a large number of cases before the Courts of the European Union.

Maja Brkan

Dr. Maja Brkan serves as Judge at the General Court of the European Union. She is a Visiting Fellow of the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity and Distinguished Fellow of Maastricht Centre for European Law. She was Associate Professor of European Union Law at Maastricht University (2018-2021) and Assistant Professor at the same university (2013-2018), as well as Associate Director of the Maastricht Centre for European Law (2017-2020). Prior to her academic appointment, she served as a legal advisor (référéndaire) at the Court of Justice of the EU (2007-2013).

Wojciech Wiewiórowski

Wojciech Wiewiórowski is the European Data Protection Supervisor. He was appointed by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council on 5 December 2019 for a term of five years. Before his appointment, he served as Assistant European Data Protection Supervisor from 2014 to 2019 and as Inspector General for the Protection of Personal Data at the Polish Data Protection Authority, a position which he had held since 2010. He was also Vice Chair of the Working Party Article 29 Group.

Anna Pouliou

Anna Pouliou is an internationally recognised data protection expert with over 15 years of experience in this field. She is a qualified attorney and has held leading roles and led privacy teams in major global corporations but also worked as a partner in the Big4, offering data protection advisory services to private and public sectors alike. In February 2024, she was appointed Chair of the Data Protection Commission at CERN, the data protection supervisory authority of the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

Paolo Balboni 

Paolo Balboni (PhD) is a Professor of Privacy, Cybersecurity, and IT Contract Law at the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity (ECPC) within the Maastricht University Faculty of Law.

He is also a Founding Partner of ICT Legal Consulting (ICTLC), an international law firm, and ICT Cyber Consulting, a company specialised in information/data security.

Massimo Marelli

Massimo Marelli LL.B. (QMUL), LL.M (Cantab) is the Head of Data Protection Office at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). 

Before taking this role at the ICRC headquarters in Geneva, Massimo held several positions as a Delegate in the field and legal adviser at the ICRC. Prior to joining the ICRC, Massimo worked as lawyer at the UK Office of Fair Trading, Referendaire at the EU General Court, and as Solicitor in private practice.

Cecilia Alvarez

Cecilia Álvarez Rigaudias has been the EMEA Privacy Policy Director at Meta since March 2019. From 2015 to 2019, she served as European Privacy Officer Lead of Pfizer, Vice-Chair of the EFPIA Data Protection Group and Chairwoman of IPPC-Europe. For an interim period, she was also the Legal Lead of the Spanish Pfizer subsidiaries. She formerly worked 18 years in a reputed Spanish law firm, leading the data protection, IT and ecommerce areas of practice as well as the LATAM Data Protection Working Group.

Christopher Kuner

Dr. Christopher Kuner is Affiliate Professor at the University of Copenhagen, Associate of the Centre for European Legal Studies of the University of Cambridge, and Senior Privacy Counsel in the Brussels office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. He has practiced data protection law for thirty years, and has taught at universities including the University of Cambridge and the European University Institute. A member of the European Commission Stakeholder Group on the GDPR, he is one of the principal editors of the GDPR commentary published by Oxford University Press, and was awarded a medal by the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan.

Herke Kranenborg

Dr. Herke Kranenborg is a member of the European Commission’s Legal Service specialising in subjects relating to digitalisation (data protection, artificial intelligence and cyber security). In addition to advising the Commission and its departments in this area, he regularly represent the Commission in litigation before the EU Courts in Luxembourg. Herke is a Professor in European Privacy and Data Protection Law at Maastricht University.

Gianclaudio Malgieri

Dr Gianclaudio Malgieri is an Associate Professor of Law & Technology and a Board Member at eLaw – Center for Law and Digital Technologies. He serves as the Honorary Director of the Brussels Privacy Hub, Free University of Brussels (VUB) and as the Managing Editor of Computer Law and Security Review, an External Ethics Expert of the European Commission. He leads the RESOCIAL Project (funded by NWO and ZonMw), an interdisciplinary project on social media vulnerability and resilience.

Frankie Williams

Frankie Williams is Chief Legal Officer at DeepL. DeepL's AI-powered translation and writing technology enables businesses and individuals to communicate with category leading accuracy across more than thirty languages.

With over twenty years of experience, Frankie advised on international mergers and acquisitions in a variety of sectors before transitioning into hyper-growth technology. With previous roles at FARFETCH and King Digital, and as an adviser to technology start-ups and scale-ups as member of the Atomico Expert Network, Frankie has established herself as an innovator in the establishment, growth, and leadership of modern in-house legal and compliance functions. 

Karolina Mojzesowicz

Karolina Mojzesowicz is Deputy Head of Unit in the unit responsible for data protection at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST). She represented the Commission in the interinstitutional negotiations with the European Parliament and the Council on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and on the Procedural Regulation on the application of the GDPR. She is currently involved in the work on the Digital Omnibus, representing the Commission in interinstitutional negotiations. She is also responsible for GDPR implementation in the EU and for ensuring coherence of personal data processing provisions across legislation within the EU’s Digital Strategy. Previously, she spent over ten years in the European Commission’s Legal Service, working on EU competition and international trade law and representing the Commission before the EU Courts and the WTO. She holds a PhD in EU law from Germany.

Joyce Groneschild

Joyce Groneschild is the Deputy-Director of the European Centre on Privacy and Cybersecurity (ECPC) at the Faculty of Law. Joyce is a strategic marketing specialist with a strong focus on value co-creation. She has a longstanding experience in running executive education programmes for professionals, managing large projects and developing executive programmes to fit organisations’ needs globally.
