The Act of Killing

The Act Of Killing is a documentary about the mass murders in Indonesia in 1965-66, in which over a million supposed Communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals were killed.

The perpetrators of the day are interviewed and invited to re-enact their deeds. At first, they are proud of their past and cannot wait to re-enact it in film scenes complete with sets, costumes, fireworks and volunteer victims. However, when film violence becomes entangled with memories, their bluster gradually makes way for feelings of unease and regret.

This film is planned in combination with the lecture by John Roosa, PhD about The Indonesian Politicide of 1965-66.
