The 4th Industrial Revolution and Innovation Wars

Fourth Industrial Revolution: “The convergence into new applications and domains of various technologies that are currently developed, such as bio-, nano-, and material technologies, artificial intelligence, big data, internet of things and 3D printing.”

In order to meet the seventeen sustainable development goals, set by the UN, technological innovation in frontier technologies is key. With advent of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), however, the struggle to become the frontrunner in these frontier technologies has become as pertinent as meeting these goals. With the multilateral trading system facing its greatest crisis to date, rule-based trading in goods and services is being replaced by “America First” and a rise in nationalism. This lecture deals with the question how innovation policy can form a conduit or hindrance to facilitate technology transfer in the 4IR, and what role state and industrial actors have in shaping a sustainable 4IR economy.
