Why this programme
An academic degree in computer science doesn’t just open doors, it puts you at the heart of the digital revolution. Whether you dream of launching a startup, pioneering quantum computing, or securing the world’s networks, this is where your journey begins.
As a computer scientist, you team up with other curious minds to work on highly advanced technologies, like high-performance computing, network engineering or software engineering for critical systems in, for instance, healthcare or energy sectors. Guided by world-leading researchers, you’ll gain the skills to turn bold ideas into reality.
Pick your favourite topics
You will learn more than just coding. Computer Science allows you to specialise in two of four topics. You will also do a project related to the topic.
- Intelligent Interaction
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
- High Performance Computing
- Cybersecurity
Use high-tech facilities
The Department of Advanced Computing Sciences houses several high-tech facilities available to students.
- DACS Lab - a laboratory for cognitive robotics and complex intelligent systems
- High-performance computer cluster - flexible, fast, and future-ready computing infrastructure
5 good reasons to study at Maastricht University
Discover your passion
Computers can always be faster, smarter, more powerful, and secure. You can be the one making it happen. Our programme is all about software engineering, with deep dives into information security, high-performance computing, AI, quantum tech, embedded systems, and human-computer interaction.
New to these concepts? No problem. We start with the basics and guide you step by step. Along the way, you’ll level up your skills, unlock projects, and find the area that excites you most.
Computer Science = Real Impact, Real Skills
Computer science is about human cleverness, teamwork, creativity, and solving real problems. From day one, you’ll learn to collaborate, plan, and present like a pro.
How? Project-based learning. Every semester, you and a team of five will build real solutions, coached by tutors and sharpened by workshops. Prepare yourself for a successful career!
Benefit from our huge experience
You will learn from lecturers of the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS). From the start on, almost 40 years ago, we have experience with computer science research and project-centred learning. Join the thousands of students who, over the years, choose to study in a field of computer science at DACS.
Engage in an international student community
Maastricht University is the most international university in the Netherlands. Here, you’ll join a diverse, global classroom, preparing you for an international career in tech.
As a student, you’ll be part of the vibrant Department of Advanced Computing Sciences community, with access to the study association MSV Incognito, social events like the annual department barbecue, and even student-led initiatives such as MaaSec, Maastricht’s first cybersecurity student association.
The sky is the limit
If you’re up for extra challenges, apply for one of two honours tracks in the third year:
CS@Work: you’ll spend 60% of your time at a local company, tackling real computer science problems with guidance from both a lecturer and a company mentor. Gain real-world experience and earn a monthly wage while you’re at it.
MaRBLe 2.0: a research-focused honours track for future innovators. Work on a state-of-the-art research project in a similar way as in professional research institutes.
“MaaSec bridges computing practice and research through hands-on events and real projects, supported by peer mentors and experts. Our community connects you with students, researchers, and industry partners, offering pathways to internships and collaborations. Whether you’re starting out or advancing, you’ll find a supportive environment to build expertise, a portfolio, and contribute to impactful projects.”
