Diogo Sampaio Lima (D.F.)

I am an Assistant Professor of Economics in the Macro, International & Labour Economics (MILE) department at Maastricht University's School of Business and Economics. My research lies at the intersection of Macro-Finance and International Economics, providing quantitative insights into critical global financial stability challenges.

My primary research agenda centers on sovereign debt and default issues. I investigate the fundamental questions surrounding international borrowing: Why do countries default, how should debt restructuring be managed to maximize welfare, and what is the optimal structure of sovereign liabilities in an uncertain world?

Core Policy and Research Interests

My current research program extends to several frontier areas of economic policy:

  • Climate Finance Connection: I analyze the emerging financial risks posed by climate change, focusing on how climate transition risks and physical risks affect corporate and sovereign credit risk, capital flows, and the stability of financial markets.
  • Monetary-Fiscal Interactions: A major focus is the strategic interplay between monetary and fiscal policy, particularly when sovereign debt is high. I examine the conditions under which coordination or conflict between these two policy arms can influence debt sustainability, long-term inflation dynamics, and the effectiveness of stabilization efforts.
  • Macroprudential Policy: My research explores the design and efficacy of macroprudential tools—the use of regulations to target and mitigate systemic financial risk. I study how these policies interact with both sovereign risk and global capital flows to enhance the overall resilience of the domestic financial system.

In summary, my research employs quantitative macroeconomics to provide policy-relevant analysis on how countries can manage global financial fragilities, navigate the complex trade-offs of fiscal and monetary policy, and adapt their financial systems to achieve stable and sustainable economic development in the long run.
