Methodology and Statistics (FPN)
Our mission is to support the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience by sharing statistical knowledge and developing methods to better understand the world. By advancing the statistical discipline, we indirectly help to better understand human behavior, cognition, and mental health.
Our vision is to advance psychological science and its impact on society through methodological innovation, statistical expertise, interdisciplinary collaboration, and dedicated teaching. We strive to empower students, researchers, and practitioners with the quantitative tools needed to address complex psychological and societal challenges.
The Department of Methodology and Statistics of the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) works in close collaboration with the Department of Methodology and Statistics of the Faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML). Together we are a group of around 20 staff members from PhD student to Professor, with 6 members in FPN and 11 in FHML.
Our department is active in three main domains: education, research and consultancy.
Education
The department teaches statistics from bachelor to PhD level. We also give statistical advice to students writing their bachelor or master thesis.
Research
We develop statistical methods to address the challenges posed by increasingly complex data, with applications in Bayesian mixed (multilevel) regression models, agreement and reliability, and the detection of person–situation interaction.
Consultancy
Our group provides quantitative and methodological support to researchers, assisting with research planning, data analysis, and dissemination of results. The statistical innovations emerging from our own research also contribute directly to these collaborations. At present, we co-supervise 5 PhD students from different departments and 2 PhD students in statistics.
