The Hong Kong Principles for assessing researchers: Fostering research integrity

Message from the Platform Scientific Integrity MUMC+:

Do you know the five Hong Kong Principles for assessing researchers? These principles focus on recognizing behavior that makes research good and reliable in evaluating researchers in the context of decision-making about appointments, promotions and grants. The principles are explained and provided with best practice examples and are as follows:

  • Assess responsible research practices.
  • Value complete reporting.
  • Reward the practice of open science.
  • Acknowledge a broad range of research activities.
  • Recognize essential other tasks like peer review and mentoring.
  • Further information and didactic material can be found on the website of the World Conferences of Research Integrity Foundation.

The article about the Hong Kong Principles (HKPs) has been published as an open access publication in PLOS Biology. The HKPs have been formulated and approved and are closely in line with the Statement of VSNU, NWO, NFU and ZonMw recognizing and valuing scientists and the National Plan Open Science.

Further information and didactic material can be found on the website of the World Conferences of Research Integrity Foundation.
