Non-degree ('Bijvak' and contract education)

School of Business and Economics

Are you interested in a single course or skills training at the School of Business and Economics, but are you not a student at Maastricht University?  With a valid registration at our School, you can follow courses, take exams, and use the University Library and other UM facilities. On this page, you will find all relevant information applicable to your situation. 

Approximately 300 courses and skills training on BSc and MSc level are on offer. You can find all courses, course descriptions (including prerequisites and levels) and coordinators via code.unimaas.nl. To check which courses you can take, please select Non Degree Courses. The duration of a course is 7 weeks; for a skills training 2 weeks. Exact dates of course periods can be found in the course descriptions or looked up in the academic calendar. The workload of a course is approximately 20 hours a week, including group meetings and individual study. Students are not allowed to take more than two courses in a period. The workload for a skills training is about 40 hours per week. You can follow maximum 2 courses per course period (period 1,2,4,and 5) and 1 skill per skills period (period 3 and 6). What are the admission requirements and how to apply?

The admission requirements depend on your institutional status. Please see below which one is applicable to your situation and read the admission requirements carefully.

Contract students and PhD candidates of universities other than Maastricht University

Bachelor or Master Students from other Dutch universities ('Bijvak' -student)

For students who are already registered at another Dutch university and who want to follow a course at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics.
* Please note: a ‘bijvak’-student is allowed to take 1 course per course period only. This course will be free of charge.

Before you start the application, please make sure you have:

  • A copy of your passport/identity card
  • A passport photo
  • A certificate of enrolment from your current education institute
  • A Dutch visa valid on the moment of application, course registration and education (only for Non-EU students).

Below you can find the registration deadlines for education. You are automatically registered for the first-chance exam.

Costs

The fee for attending a course on a contract basis is €725 and €425 for a skills training. SBE alumni (former regular full-time students) receive a reduction of €60 for courses and €30 for skills trainings. These fees are subject to change. Fees must be paid no later than the date as stated on the invoice. You will receive an invoice after the registration deadline for courses, so the invoices are sent separately for each course period.

Please note: If payment has not been received before the date stated on your invoice, you are not allowed to participate in your courses at SBE but you will still be held to the obligation of payment. Fees are not applicable for Maastricht University subsidiary students, Maastricht University PhD students and bachelor's or master's students registered at other Dutch universities.

Cancellation and course switching

After the registration deadline it is not possible anymore to cancel courses. Switching to another course in the same period, is possible until the last Friday 12:00h (noon) before the start of education, provided that there are places available in the course. Switching to a course in another period is not possible.

 

Rights 

If you are registered as a contract student, subsidiary student or PhD student, you have the right to follow the courses agreed on. You will receive access to the Student Portal as well as a temporary email account and a UM card. You can also take exams and do assignments; however, this type of enrolment cannot lead to the award of a degree. If you pass an exam, you can request a certificate. This type of enrolment gives you no right to financial assistance from the Dutch government (studiefinanciering).
