You may have seen them before at the Clean Up Days in November and February: the Peukenzee team. In May, they will return to UM again to draw attention to the smoke-free university. They will do this by making the grounds around the university buildings free of cigarette butts. And they could use some help! The MHeNs PhD Academy is a dedicated educational program for a selected group of up to 20 newly incoming PhD candidates at school MHeNs, who start their PhD on 4 September 2023 or later. It is open to all MHeNs PhD candidates who are appointed at Maastricht University or MUMC+, but also candidates in other categories (e.g., ‘external’ candidates) can apply if their reside in or near Maastricht. The program offers an integrated program of transferrable skills, spread over the full PhD period (see figure). Also, in year 1 each candidate is assessed, and regular personal guidance is available from a coach of the Staff Career Centre. The focus of the programme is on (personal) leadership, self-awareness, career, time and stress management, and negotiation techniques. The learned skills will enhance the professional and personal development of PhD candidates. It will provide them with competencies that enable them to flourish in different sectors after their defence, both within and outside academia. Each candidate obtains a MHeNs certificate at completion of the program.
