Teacher Information Points at UM

UM faculties now have their own Teacher Information Points (TIPs): small, local hubs where teaching staff can get “just-in-time”, on-demand support that’s grounded in the realities of everyday teaching. The idea is straightforward – help should be close by, practical, and easy to use.

TIPs were launched in 2024 after EDLAB secured an NPULS grant to strengthen teacher support across the university. The model builds on a growing body of research showing that professional development is most effective when it responds directly to the challenges teachers face in their classrooms and tutorials.

Each TIP is coordinated by a dedicated staff member within the faculty, fully integrated into that faculty’s existing support culture. Together, these coordinators make up a university-wide network led by EDLAB, designed to share expertise, exchange experiences, and foster ongoing professional growth.

Over the past year, TIP coordinators have taken a close look at local support structures, refined what already works, and introduced new activities where gaps emerged. In some faculties, TIPs add extra capacity to well-established systems; in others, they provide a much-needed starting point.

The bigger aim sits beyond individual faculties: to strengthen UM’s wider culture of teaching support.
