Honorary Doctorate for Liesbeth Lijnzaad Awarded by Aalborg University
Professor Liesbeth Lijnzaad, endowed professor Practice of International Law at the Faculty of Law, and judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg, received an honorary doctorate from Aalborg University (AAU) in Denmark on 4 April.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at AAU awarded this distinction in recognition of her remarkable career and outstanding contributions to international law – particularly the law of the sea, but also the regulation of armed conflicts, human rights and women’s rights – as well as her ability to combine academic excellence with practical experience in both diplomacy and international legal practice.
Since 2017, she has served as a judge at ITLOS, where she has chaired the Chamber for Marine Environment Disputes since October 2023.
Before joining academia, Liesbeth Lijnzaad served for many years at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as Head of the International Law Department. She is also actively involved in research projects and scholarly collaboration.
The Faculty of Law warmly congratulates Professor Lijnzaad on this well-deserved honour!
