How UM staff is standing more
Professor Luc van Loon from the Department of Human Biology and Movement Sciences (FHML) at UM has a unique office setup. In alignment with the Education That Moves You philosophy, van Loon has replaced traditional chairs with bicycles.
"I rarely sit behind my desk, so I've placed six bicycles around my conference table. Some colleagues enthusiastically pedal during our meetings, while I usually stand. I do find it challenging to pedal when I need to concentrate, but I often cycle while listening," explained van Loon.
As van Loon emphasised, "We often say that 'sitting is the new smoking.' These bicycle chairs help break the cycle of passive sitting behaviour.
