Biobased Materials Research group and AMIBM show rapid expansion
Since the Biobased Materials Research group started at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in 2013, its size has increased markedly. The group itself has gained a large number of UDs, UHDs, PhDs and other supporting staff members and in October 2015 the Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM) joined them in building 110. Work and lab space is becoming scarce and the whole group is looking forward to moving into the new facilities of the Centre Court and building 1 later this year.
Since September 2015 we have welcomed several new PhD’s, researchers and student assistants to our group. They join us from various universities, both national and internationally. Two new PhD’s have joined us from the TU Eindhoven, one from TU Delft, one from Utrecht University, one from the RWTH Aachen and one PhD has joined us all the way from ENSCMu in France.
In January our research team was strengthened by dr. Dario Romano. He joins us from Loughborough University (UK). His research focus is catalytic polymeric synthesis and organometallic synthesis. We have also welcomed Achim Besen as research assistant for the Wet Spinning facility, Stefan Rasche as senior researcher, Leonie Fritsch as a junior researcher and Ann-Katrin Beuel as student assistant. They all join us from the ITA and Fraunhofer IME insitutes of the RWTH Aachen. Their research topics are molecular biology, genomics and cell structure with biobased materials.
We expect further rapid growth over the next couple of years.
About the Department of Biobased Materials
Maastricht University’s Department of Biobased Materials is located at the world leading innovation location Brightlands Chemelot Campus.
The department has two main pillars; education and research. The education pillar represents the Biobased Materials master programme, which is now in its second year and is rapidly becoming one of the best programmes in its field. The research pillar represents an international group of scientists that participate in projects within the institutes AMIBM (Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials) and Chemelot InSciTe (Institute for Science and Technology).
The multidisciplinary team has accumulated scientists with expertise in organic chemistry, biocatalysis, leaders in the field of new biobased blocks, polymer chemistry, polymer physics, polymer engineering, material science, tissue engineering, sustainability evaluations, and biobased & biomedical materials applications.

Professor Thomas Cleij reappointed as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering
The Executive Board of Maastricht University has reappointed Prof. Dr. Thomas Cleij as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Thomas will continue to lead the faculty until March 2031.
