The School of Business and Economics celebrates 1,500 new graduates
On Sunday, 24 November 2024, the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE) proudly celebrated the achievements of more than 1,500 graduates from bachelor’s and master’s programmes. The festive ceremonies, held at the MECC Maastricht, marked a significant milestone for the SBE community and a memorable day for graduates, their families, and friends.
The day was filled with eleven ceremonies, where all graduates walked the stage to receive their well-earned degrees. This year’s graduation ceremonies were particularly special, as SBE marked its 40th anniversary with the theme Global Minds, Local Roots, celebrating four decades of academic excellence. Adding to these festivities, we celebrated UM’s 100,000th alum Manon Weusten, who received her master’s degree International Business specialising in Accounting and Control with cum laude honours.
Kaj Thomsson, director of SBE’s bachelor’s programmes: “Today, we recognise your hard work and determination. Your time here has prepared you for the challenges ahead, and we’re confident you’ll take on those challenges with success. Congratulations and good luck!”
In his speech, Kaj also shared three valuable lessons for success in career and life: “If you are open to true challenges and willing to risk failure, if you are intellectually curious and you are continuously learning, and if you treat everyone with respect and dignity - I am confident that you will respect yourself and you will look back with pride on the path you have taken.”
Inspiring words from graduates
The ceremonies featured several inspiring speeches from graduates, reflecting on their journey at SBE. One of the speakers, Kyra de Haan who graduated in the bachelor’s programme International Business, shared: "Today, as I look back, I can say that SBE has been more than just a place of study. It’s a platform of opportunities, a place that supported me, and a community that encouraged me to go beyond my comfort zone. To my friends, family, and the SBE community—I want to say thank you. You gave me the courage to take the steps to achieve my goals and you helped me realise that no dream truly is too big.”
