Professor Frederik-Jan van Schooten receives MUMC+ honorary medal
During his farewell lecture on Friday 10 October, Frederik-Jan van Schooten was awarded the MUMC+ honorary medal by Dean Annemie Schols. This special medal is given as a token of great appreciation to officials who have made exceptional contributions to Maastricht UMC+.
Since his arrival in Maastricht in 1991, Frederik-Jan van Schooten has played a meaningful role in countless ways. He has fulfilled an impressive number of roles and functions both within and outside Maastricht UMC+.
Safer living environment
As professor of Genetic Toxicology, he pushed boundaries with innovative research into the health effects of exposure to harmful substances from air, food, smoke and consumer products, and the development of breath diagnostics for early detection of diseases. In his role as an educator, he inspired generations of students and supervised more than fifty PhD candidates, many of whom now hold key positions within and outside academia.
In addition, he contributed to promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in various board positions at the faculty and within research institute NUTRIM. As a member of the Health Council and in collaboration with the RIVM and the NVWA, he was closely involved in policy advice on translating scientific insights into a safer living environment.
What characterises Frederik-Jan above all else is his ability to connect: the bridges he builds between fundamental toxicology and clinical applications, between science and society, and between people. His research and leadership demonstrate commitment, vision and collaboration. By awarding him the MUMC+ honorary medal, the board of Maastricht UMC+ expresses its great appreciation for this exceptional contribution. We congratulate Frederik-Jan on this special distinction and wish him good luck in his next phase of his life, in good health and together with his loved ones.
