Maastricht University imposes sanctions on student associations
In August, Maastricht University staff visited the introduction camps organised by student associations to monitor compliance with agreements on initiation rituals. They found that Tragos and Circumflex violated a number of provisions under the Code of Conduct. Today, the UM has informed both associations about the consequences.
Despite an official warning issued in October 2016, Tragos violated several provisions. A conditional sanction will come into force, freezing any administrative compensation earmarked for the association for a period of 30 months. Circumflex was found guilty of lighter violations of a number of provisions and has been given the aforementioned official warning.
The Code of Conduct covering introduction camps and initiation activities involving prospective members was mutually drawn up by the University of Maastricht and the student associations. It includes arrangements regarding personal hygiene, sleep and physical rest, social behaviour and nutrition.
Maastricht University and the student associations are actively working together to prevent any violations of the code of conduct during the introductory activities ahead of the next academic year.
