Community of Practice on AI & Education: introducing faculty AI updates and contact points
On Wednesday 10 September, EDLAB hosted the first AI & Education Community of Practice meeting of the new academic year. The goal was to introduce the representatives for AI in each faculty and give CoP members an update on current initiatives at UM. Present at the meeting were CoP participants, faculty representatives, the University Library, Academic Affairs, ICTS, Corporate Information Office, and EDLAB.
Faculty AI updates
The discussion highlighted three main themes: 1) Technology & security, 2) AI literacy and 3) educational quality/innovation. After short introductions, each faculty representative shared their progress and challenges in integrating AI into education:
- FHML (Desiree Joosten-ten Brinke & Henry Woodruff) is offering tailored workshops for students and tutors. The faculty has also developed guidelines and policy documents and is reviewing courses to make sure learning outcomes align with UM AI policies. These activities are supported by a dedicated task force.
- FPN (Phil Brüll) has developed a faculty-specific policy document, which is available on the FPN intranet. Training modules for staff and students are also in place, with a strong focus on responsible AI use that does not compromise educational quality.
- FSE (Lonneke Bevers) has developed a policy document for FSE, while supporting GenAI & constructive alignment in educational development.
- FASoS (Sjoerd Stoffels) has included a GenAI table in every course book to indicate what is allowed and not allowed. Furthermore, FASoS introduced a GenAI diary for students to track AI use throughout learning activities. Relevant documents are published on the faculty intranet, and workshops such as AI and academic writing are being offered on the use of AI in research. Work continues on ensuring privacy and safe environments.
- SBE (Bas Giesbers) has recently developed a SBE GenAI policy document and guidelines for staff and students.
- LAW (Evelien Stinkens) was unable to attend the meeting.
Tom Gijsbers (AI specialist at ICTS) and Paul Grooten (Strategic Advisor data, analytics and AI at the CI office) provided substance to the security, privacy and fraud concerns. They also discussed the topic of digital sovereignty and ‘safe environment’ and concluded that both are necessary to attain but extremely difficult to fully realise.
