Dr Margje van de Wiel (M.W.J.)

Margje van de Wiel is cognitive psychologist and associate professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience at Maastricht University. Her research focuses on professional learning, workplace learning, professional decision-making, expertise development, and learning in higher education. She has a special interest in medical expertise and the role gut feelings play in diagnostic reasoning, as well as in teacher development. She teaches courses on Learning and Human Resources and develops professional development activities for teaching staff. She coordinated the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) at her faculty and Maastricht University for more than ten years and was chair of WUO from 2019-2023, where representatives of the Dutch research universities discuss development of teaching staff. She received her Ph.D. at Maastricht University for her dissertation on medical expertise development in 1997. She obtained a Master's degree in Cognitive Psychology at the Radboud University Nijmegen in 1991.
