Workshop: AI in your educational toolbox: supporting teachers and student learning

Designed for teachers, it combines foundational knowledge with hands-on activities to explore the potential of AI as a tool to make teaching and learning practices more efficient. Participants will gain insights into the history and principles of AI, learn effective prompt engineering techniques, and reflect on constructive alignment principles to integrate AI meaningfully into their courses. Through real-world use cases and collaborative exercises, teachers will leave with actionable strategies to optimise AI’s role in facilitating student learning experiences.

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

• Understand Generative AI basics: gain foundational knowledge of Generative AI, its history, and key concepts.
• Practice prompt engineering: develop skills to craft effective prompts for AI tools (specifically, ChatGPT) and explore how varying approaches can influence outputs.
• Explore constructive alignment with AI: learn how to align AI use with constructive alignment principles for educational benefits.
• Implement AI in course design: reflect on and adapt a course setup to integrate AI tools in ways that support student learning.
• Promote conscious AI use: recognise AI’s potential and limitations, fostering a reflective and collaborative approach to its application in academia.
   

Who should attend: all staff interested in AI and education; primarily for teaching staff involved in course coordination, design, and/or tutoring,

About the trainers

My name is Youri, and in my daily life, I primarily work for the Municipality of Venray and Horst aan de Maas. In addition, I run a part-time business where I provide workshops and inspiration sessions about the digital world. With a background in IT and experience across various organisations, I specialise in connecting people and technology. I believe that digital innovations truly succeed when people understand them and feel empowered to use them. My mission is to inspire people to embrace new technologies and provide them with practical tools they can immediately apply. Whether it’s digital transformation, data-driven work, or enhancing digital skills, I combine in-depth knowledge with an accessible and inspiring approach.

Lonneke Bevers is an Associate Professor and Assessment Expert at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, where she coordinates the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) programme and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). She is also a teacher at University College Maastricht (UCM), where she contributes to interdisciplinary education. As the faculty liaison for generative AI policy, Lonneke explores innovative applications of AI in education. With extensive experience in assessment design and curriculum development, she is committed to enhancing learning and teaching practices through the integration of new technologies.

Elian is a teacher lecturer at University College Maastricht, focusing on courses on Public Policy and Public Health. He is actively engaged in course design, including for the Bachelor Thesis (Capstone) at UCM, in which he finds it important to actively think about potential implications and conscious implementation of LLMs into education. Next to this, he has several years of government experience, working at the Province of Limburg.
