Spark Session on artistic research practices with Dr. Inge Römgens
We are delighted to invite you to our upcoming Spark Session on artistic research practices with Dr. Inge Römgens on 20th May 2025, 13.30 - 14.30 at the Art Science Lab, University College Maastricht, Heksenstraat 8.
Presentation Title: Navigating (seemingly) incompatible research practice through writing
Abstract: Artistic research consists of research driven by art practices. As such, it brings together the (seemingly) incompatible worlds of the arts and academia. This is what makes artistic research exciting; the promises of hybridity, innovation and new (perspectives on) knowledge. However, hybridity also means trouble. It unravels (tacit) assumptions and conventions, disturbing the peace at conventional (art or academic) institutions, requiring critical reflection on why things are organized the way they are and ‘what if’ they would be otherwise. Explicating the different situated perspectives in an artistic research project, and what they are based on, is crucial, but is not self-evident.
This presentation will introduce you to the experimental approach I developed during my PhD project for explicating the different situated perspectives that I found in my fieldwork. I calibrated an experimental writing practice informed by performance writing and theatre practices. I look forward to discussing my (impossible) attempt at writing a story that is simultaneously imaginative and analytical and includes various forms of dialogue (in different languages).
About the speaker: Inge is Assistant Professor at University College Maastricht (UCM). She teaches several courses and projects in the arts and (applied) research and serves as academic advisor and thesis supervisor to the students. Her own research focuses on practices of artistic research and education. In her PhD project, The Troubled Suitcase, taking seriously collaborative artistic research practices, she observed how artistic research was done, defined and discussed in teams where artists and academics tried to collaborate. Inge enjoys (creative) writing and theatre practices.
We hope that you can join us for Inge’s unique presentation and reflections on experimental approaches towards research. Please email us at macch@maastrichtuniversity.nl to confirm that you will be attending. We look forward to seeing you there!
Best regards,
Claartje Rasterhoff and Kulsoom Maik, on behalf of the MACCH team
