During five centuries of European colonial expansion, a massive flow of objects of cultural and historical importance took place from colonial possessions to European countries. Museums and private collectors in the Netherlands benefited from this as much as their colleagues in other European countries. They no longer deny that part of that flow consisted of spoils of war and other tainted objects. Governments and museums in former colonies want to retrieve objects and come up with specified return claims. This programme focuses on case studies of return negotiations with former colonies and European countries. In dialogue, we will explore questions relating to return negotiations within the context of the current decolonisation discourse.
