Livestream and Discussion of the ICJ Advisory Opinion on Israel’s obligations in relation to the UN and other actors in the Occupied Palestinian Territory

-

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will deliver its Advisory Opinion on the Obligations of Israel in relation to the Presence and Activities of the United Nations and Other Actors in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The opinion comes shortly after the 10 October ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which promised a scale-up of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Yet UNRWA, the main UN agency operating in the territory, has so far not been allowed to take part in aid deliveries. The advisory opinion responds to a UN General Assembly request, following Israel’s October 2024 laws terminating UNRWA’s operations and revoking cooperation with the agency. It will address core legal issues around humanitarian assistance, UN privileges and immunities, and the responsibilities of third states under international law.

Join us in the UM Faculty of Law's Statenzaal for a livestream of the opinion’s delivery, followed by a discussion led by staff from the Department of International Law.

For background on the request and the main issues at stake, you can read more from some of our staff HERE and HERE.
