Research profile
I am a sociologist of globalisation with regional expertise in East Asia and East Africa.
My research has been featured in several leading journals, in newspapers such as The Guardian, and in international broadcast media.
My current research interests include:
- The politics of global knowledge and cultural production (with special reference to societies in the global South)
- Development theory (with a focus on theories of modernity and modernisation)
- The political economy of industrialisation in Ethiopia and (historically) East Asia
- Social upgrading in global value chains
- The social role of the literary novel in an era of global capitalism
- Creative nonfiction in research communication
- Qualitative case studies
I am a member of the FASoS Research Panel, which advises colleagues before they submit research grant applications to external bodies.
