Your future
The demand for responsible data scientists is skyrocketing. In the Netherlands alone, there are over 100,000 ICT companies and 16,000+ open ICT vacancies (CBS, Q1 2025).
Where Can You Work as a Responsible Data Scientist?
Data scientists with ethical and legal expertise are in high demand. Potential roles include:
- Data Ethicist (e.g., at big tech, government, or human rights organisations)
- Privacy Officer (in healthcare or corporate sectors)
- AI Compliance Specialist (ensuring algorithms meet legal standards
- Researcher in Responsible AI (at research institutes or universities)
- Founder of an ethical tech startup
- PhD student at a university
During my studies in Knowledge Engineering (now DSAI) at Maastricht University, terms like “data science”, let alone “responsible data science”, didn’t even exist. For twenty years, I’ve been applying artificial intelligence in my work, first as head of the IBM Benelux Center for Advanced Studies and now as the global AI strategy lead at TKH. Throughout that time, I’ve seen the clear need for a master’s programme that combines technical depth with social responsibility.
Mastering technology alone isn’t enough. You also need to understand its social, ethical, and societal impact. The MSc in Responsible Data Science trains you to be a data scientist who looks beyond algorithms and models. You’ll tackle practical questions: How do we explain algorithmic decisions? How do we prevent unintended discrimination? How do we balance innovation with privacy and security? These skills are what separate AI projects that fail from those that create real value for organisations and society.
When I was a student, the Responsible Data Science master’s programme did not yet exist. After 15 years of leading data, analytics and AI initiatives, I can confidently say I would choose this programme today.
What sets this master apart is its strategic balance between technical excellence and responsible innovation. It combines advanced courses in machine learning and explainable data with critical insights into ethics, responsible AI, and the impact of data on society.
The ability to turn data into value while safeguarding trust is essential. This programme prepares you to not only master the technology but also shape an ethical and sustainable data culture, something every modern organisation urgently needs.
