Why this programme
Do you always trust AI? You’re likely aware that data applications can backfire when it comes to privacy, legislation, energy use, or societal impact. Here, you’ll learn to embed reliability, ethics, responsibility, and proactive risk management into your designs from the very start. We call this responsible data science by design.
The MSc in Responsible Data Science is about more than just technical skills. It’s about making informed choices: How do you prevent bias in algorithms? How do you protect privacy? And how can data be used to create a better world? In this master’s, you’ll combine technical expertise with ethical, legal, and societal insights. You’ll build safer applications with transparent algorithms and safeguards to correct errors. You’ll become the data scientist the world needs!
Responsible Data Science is about:
- Bias mitigation in AI decision-making
- Energy efficiency of large language models
- Data quality assurance
- Privacy-preserving medical data exchange
- Digital sovereignty
5 reasons to choose Responsible Data Science
Data with impact
You don’t just learn how to analyse data, you explore why and for whom. How do you prevent discrimination in algorithms? How do you protect privacy in a data-driven world? In Responsible Data Science, you go beyond the technical. You learn to use data responsibly.
Whether you’re delving into machine learning, privacy-preserving data mining, explainable AI, or knowledge graphs, themes like data governance, ethics, law (such as GDPR), and sustainable data use are woven into every lesson. They’re inseparable from the field itself.
Unique in Europe
No other master’s combines deep technical training (machine learning, AI, large language models) with ethics, law, and societal context. Here, you become the bridge between technologists, lawyers, policymakers, and businesses.
Project-Based Learning
From day one, you collaborate, often internationally, plan, and present like a pro. Through project-based learning, you and your team build real solutions, guided by tutors and sharpened by workshops, preparing you for a successful career.
Top-Notch Facilities
At the Faculty of Science and Engineering, you’ll work with:
- High-performance Data Science Research Infrastructure.
- Dedicated project spaces.
- Brightlands Smart Services Campus.
Globally relevant
Data science knows no borders, and neither will you. In the Euregion, with international borders just a stone’s throw away, you’ll gain global experience, even through internships abroad. This master’s prepares you for an international career, whether in big tech, EU policy, or top-tier research.
Internships
Gain real-world experience, elevate your studies, and boost your career prospects with an (international) internship. Many students even secure jobs with their internship hosts! In the first half of your second year, you’ll intern to learn, grow, and prepare for the future.
Science
The Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS) leads the Responsible Data Science programme. With nearly 40 years of experience in computer science and project-based learning, DACS has educated thousands of students. Join us and be one of them!
You’ll also learn from experts at the Faculties of Law, and Arts and Social Sciences, as well as the Brightlands Institute for Smart Society (BISS).
