Your future
Once you have completed the Master’s in Medicine, you will be a qualified medical doctor (basisarts). With this degree, you can register as a physician under the Dutch BIG Act (Professions in Individual Healthcare).
Most graduates choose to pursue further specialisation within the medical field, or continue into scientific research.
Career paths
Medical Doctor
Most medical students find a position as a junior doctor in specialist training (AIOS) after completing their Master's degree. There is a wide range of specialisation options available.
Some examples include:
- General Practice (3 years)
- Psychiatry (5 years)
- Paediatrics (6 years)
- Surgery (6 years)
- Sports Medicine (4 years)
- Occupational Medicine (4 years)
After completing their specialisation, doctors typically work in (academic) hospitals or general practices. Others find employment in mental health institutions, corporate settings, sports organisations or youth healthcare services.
Researcher
Another option is to specialise as a scientific researcher. Researchers often work at universities — both in the Netherlands and abroad — but may also be employed by renowned research institutes or national government bodies.
