Yuki Nakamura, BA Arts and Culture
Studying at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) at Maastricht University offers students an enriching academic and personal experience. We spoke with Yuki Nakamura, a student in the Arts and Culture programme, to learn more about her academic journey, her thoughts on the programme, and her life in Maastricht.
When asked why she chose the programme, Yuki explained, “I was drawn to its interdisciplinarity. It integrates perspectives from politics, sociology, media, and philosophy, which allows me to explore my diverse interests while gaining a better understanding of the complexities of society.” This broad approach appealed to her curiosity and ambition to connect different fields of knowledge.
Learning Through PBL
Discussing the programme’s Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach, Yuki emphasized its impact on her education. “PBL has made me an active participant in my learning,” she said. “I appreciate how it’s student-centred, encouraging us to lead discussions and solve problems collaboratively. The interactions with peers have been one of the most enriching parts of my studies, helping me develop practical skills like communication and critical thinking.”
A Memorable Course
When we asked her about her favourite course, Yuki didn’t hesitate. “It would be Disenchantment and Ideology, which explores Europe’s political and cultural transformations from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. It was fascinating to learn about themes like democracy, capitalism, and industrialization and how they shaped modern Western society. The course gave me a deeper appreciation for understanding historical roots that are still relevant today.”
She also shared her experience writing a research paper during the Research and Writing I course, calling it a highlight of her academic journey. “It was challenging but incredibly rewarding to engage with memory studies, analyse academic literature, and build an argument. Seeing my ideas come together in a structured way was a proud moment for me.”
Personal Growth and Opportunities
Studying Arts and Culture has been transformative for Yuki’s critical thinking skills. “Every course pushes me to critically analyse texts and share my perspectives during tutorials. This process has sharpened my ability to evaluate arguments and articulate my own views,” she explained.
Outside the classroom, Yuki has embraced opportunities to get involved in the community. “Since the start of this year, I’ve been part of ESN Maastricht, an international student association. It’s been an amazing way to meet people from diverse backgrounds and contribute to creating a welcoming environment for students.”
Her time in the programme has also shaped her future aspirations. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I started, but over time I discovered my passion for politics. Now, I plan to continue my academic journey in that field after completing my Bachelor’s.”
Life in Maastricht and FASoS
When we asked Yuki about living in Maastricht, she described the city as the ideal place for students. “It’s a perfect mix of urban life and nature. You can enjoy the vibrant social scene with bars and cinemas but also relax in parks or go hiking. It’s a cosy, student-friendly city that feels like home.”
She also praised the community at FASoS. “The international environment is what makes FASoS special. Everyone—students and staff—is approachable and supportive, which fosters a sense of belonging. I’ve built valuable friendships and connections here that go beyond academics.”
Reflections and Advice
Looking back, Yuki reflected on the most rewarding aspect of her experience. “Engaging deeply with cultural and societal issues has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s helped me connect academic theories to real-world challenges while building meaningful relationships with my peers.”
For prospective students considering the programme, she offered practical advice. “Time management is key. The programme demands a lot of independent work, so staying organized will make a big difference.” She also shared advice she wished she’d given her past self: “Don’t strive for perfection. Focus on learning and improving step by step. It’s okay to make mistakes—asking questions and taking risks is part of the process.”
Final Thoughts
Yuki Nakamura’s journey through the Arts and Culture programme has been one of growth and discovery. “This programme has opened my eyes to new perspectives and shaped how I see the world,” she concluded. For Yuki, the combination of engaging academics, vibrant city life, and an inclusive community has made her experience at FASoS truly memorable.
