Vince Penders (V.)

Vince Penders is lecturer in statistics and quantitative methodology at the School of Business and Economics, with a passion for bringing his field to life. Tangible real-world problems? Let's quantify them! Visual models that will stick in your mind? Time for some stunning graphs and slick animations! Vince's goal is to make statistics inviting even to students who feel uncomfortable with maths, through engaging narratives as well as digital innovations.

Before starting as a lecturer at Maastricht University, Vince taught statistics as an independent tutor to thousands of students. An Arts and Culture graduate, he had not expected to be neck-deep in teaching quantitative science one day. He believes, however, that this background has always helped him to connect with students who are new to the field. Getting good at statistics requires an interdisciplinary mindset; the ability to build bridges. Vince also writes fantasy novels - 'speculative fiction', as a friend and colleague once called them - citing Stormwarden, the Westworld series, and the video game 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors as major influences on his work.
