Short description of the lectures
This lecture gives an insight in the basic principles of personal networking. You will get hands-on tips & tricks which help you to create an interesting network. The kind of network that can support your first steps from university into the job market.
Almost hired! Now what?
Fantastic! You've been offered a job. But often you're not there yet. You still need to negotiate about your contract, your salary and the secondary employment conditions. A difficult interview that will severely test your reasoning and emotions. You want the job but against what price?
This lecture consists of two parts.
Part one is about the preparations. What can you do before you go to the interview?
• Salary: use salary scales to your advantage.
• Secondary employment conditions: sometimes there are extras you should definitely negotiate.
• Plan B: what if you fail to agree? How far are you prepared to go?
Part two is about the actual negotiations. You will receive tips and tricks. How do negotiations work and what should you think about when you start negotiating? This part of the lecture is meant to be an eye-opener and will give you a different view of negotiations.
Getting the most out of LinkedIn
In the current labour market, LinkedIn has become so important that not having a LinkedIn account means missing out on both many job openings and valuable networking opportunities. Nowadays many workplaces will post their jobs on LinkedIn only. Furthermore, LinkedIn can be seen as a modern business card alternative and it is truly a great place to post your online C.V.
The focus in this lecture is on making you understand how LinkedIn works and in which ways you can use it to your own benefit.
The learning goals for this lecture are:
- To get a basic understanding of LinkedIn -Profile, Tags, Discussion groups, Job vacancies, Privacy settings
- To gain knowledge on how to connect to other members and thus increase your own network
- To understand what other members see and how to use this
- To ensure that other users will easily find you on LinkedIn
Applying for a job in the digital era
Internet, social media and other technological developments have significantly changed the entire job application process. A creative example of this is that some applicants produce a job application video instead of a paper motivation. But what makes your video convincing?
Many things actually change faster than our awareness of it. Recruiters are increasingly using applicant tracking systems and what does this mean for you as a job applicant?
Nowadays a lot of job interviews take place at a distance, via phone, Skype or Facetime. How do you prepare for this? In addition, your digital footprint can affect whether or not to get that highly desired job.
In this interactive workshop you will learn about developments, new possibilities and risks. You immediately get started with various practical tips and tools.
Enjoy student life
Your study life is supposed to be fun. However, admittedly, sometimes it is not. How can you prevent unpleasant surprises and elegantly avoid known and common pitfalls? In a nutshell: how can you make the most of your time as a student?
During this lecture, we will dispel some myths about studying, provide a couple of general dos and don’ts, and share some precious tips on how to make your academic life fun and memorable.

Mindfulness-meditation is a skill that takes considerable practice. This workshop provides a first introduction. Mindfulness teaches you to be present and attent in the here and now, so that you are aware of your current experience. Mindfulness teaches you to have an accepting attitude while doing that. It helps you to take some distance from the issues you worry about. An effect can be that your mind becomes calmer and that you feel more relaxed.
Boost your self confidence

During this workshop you will learn how to be more aware of your personal emotions and characteristics. You will get tools to give your personal life a positive boost.
Retrain your brain
We make use of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which fosters the development of good coping strategies. The focus is on addressing behavioural problems and negative thought patterns.
CBT starts from the assumption that it is not an event itself that give rise to negative feelings and behavioural patterns, but rather the way in which we think about it. The key is to change the way you approach and interpret these negative thoughts. This gives you a more objective view of your own feelings and perceptions, which helps you to combat the negativity and change the behaviour.
Me, myself and I
This workshop you go in search of your personal brand. What makes you you? This is about more than work experience and competencies. It is mainly about your personality, values, beliefs, life events and wishes. By thinking in this way you learn to profile yourself so that you can make it clear to others who you are and what you stand for. These are vital skills for both entrepreneurship and the employment market.
The workshop consists of two parts:
In search of your unique personal brand
Based on exercises you build your own brand. What are your ingredients, your characteristics, what do you look like and how do you sound?
Communicating your personal brand
How do you leave behind a good and correct first impression? How do you present yourself and tell your story briefly and powerfully in an elevator pitch?

Loss & mourning
Have you lost someone and do you want to put things in order and learn to let go? Then the coping with loss group may be something for you. It does not matter if your experience is about recent events or about past events that still haunt you. We speak English in this group. If you prefer to speak Dutch then please make an individual appointment.
Do you have trouble saying no? Hate speaking in public? In this training, you develop an assertive attitude and you work on your self-confidence. You learn to communicate better and to present yourself better. Setting boundaries is also an important part of the training.
Art of imperfection
You like to have it all together. You are calling the shots and are in control. You work very hard but it never seems enough or the work is never done. Maybe you have perfectionistic characteristics and it is starting to get to you.
Although working hard is a good trait, overdoing it can also cause a lot of tension and even result in stress-related problems.
In this training you learn how to deal with your ‘perfectionism’. Letting go and trying to do things less perfect. Just okay can be good enough. You will get more insight into the underlying causes of perfectionism and you’ll learn what to do to find a better balance in life to change perfectionism into optimalism.
Master your worries
Do you sometimes lie awake for hours, thinking about the same things over and over? Do you worry so much that it is hard to concentrate on your studies? Does the constant stream of negative thoughts stop you from feeling happy?
We all worry sometimes – that is what makes us human. But if it is starting to take over your life, this course may be for you.
The training gives you insight into your worrying behaviour and your brain. Through science-based techniques, such as attention training and relaxation exercises, you learn to recognise the thought patterns that lead to worrying and to address them more quickly.
