Research projects
Faculty in the health professions are expected to fulfil their roles as teachers and educators at the workplace. This is supported through faculty development programs on teaching effectiveness to provide them with the tools needed to become competent educators. It is argued that the success of these programs may be dependent on how well it supports faculty in transferring their newly acquired knowledge, skills and attitudes back to the workplace. Transfer of learning in these complex learning environments is context specific and produce different outcomes for different faculty. Therefore, not only do we need to determine whether the program is meeting the faculties immediate learning needs; but also ask more in-depth questions of: “What is working in the program? For whom? Under what circumstances? And How?” I wish to answer these questions using a realist evaluation approach to study the impact a faculty development program has on faculty through the lens of transfer of learning to the workplace.
