Aisling Miller (A.G.)
Aisling Miller is a PhD Candidate and Tutor at the Maastricht Sustainability Institute of Maastricht University. Her research is focused on Education for Sustainable Development, co-creation, sustainability competencies and student-centered learning. At present, she is tutoring on the Master program Sustainability Science, Policy and Society and in the Sustainable Development course in University College Maastricht. Prior to taking up this position, Aisling has accumulated many years experience working in both formal and non-formal education in Ireland while being involved in volunteering. She is an advocate for the Irish language and holds the position of Treasurer on the Board of Directors of Ógras, an Irish language youth organization.
Throughout the many years of practical, hands-on experience in education, Aisling has gathered a range of skills, knowledge and plenty of passion to pursue research in the area of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Having completed two research projects thus far based on ESD, she is prepared for this six year PhD journey of action research to deepen our understanding of the development of sustainability competencies in higher education.
Following completion of her Master of Education, Aisling taught in various Irish secondary schools for four years. She taught Irish and Geography to students aged 12-18 years old. In addition to her regular teaching, Aisling was involved in many extra-curricular endeavors such as Green Schools, Global Citizenship Committees and Human Rights Advocate groups. She has worked consistently over the years to broaden the scope of learning available to young people and engage in action-taking such as local beach cleans.
Following completion of her Masters in Sustainability Science, Policy and Society she worked for one year in ECO-UNESCO, a youth organization promoting environmental education to young people aged 14-18 years old in non-formal settings.
