Appointment Andrea Broderick as endowed UNESCO chair in Human Rights and Peace
UNESCO has appointed dr. Andrea Broderick as the new Chair holder (Professor) for the UNESCO Chair in Human Rights and Peace at Maastricht University from 1 September 2022. This Chair was established at Maastricht University in 2007 under the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme, with Prof.dr. Fons Coomans as the original Chair holder. Fons Coomans will retire as of September 2022. Andrea Broderick is currently an Associate Professor at the International and European Law department.
UNESCO made this appointment of Andrea Broderick following several rounds of internal and external evaluation / peer review. The appointment was approved by the UM Executive Board.
The continuation of this Chair meets a need in further strengthening the Faculty’s strongly established reputation in the field of human rights. This will be achieved by, inter alia, contributing to the development of courses related to the field of human rights and peace. Andrea will play a key leadership role within the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights, of which she was appointed the co-director in May 2022 (together with Dr. Roland Moerland), and she will continue to contribute to this Centre with key publications and other academic activities (e.g. conferences/workshops). Her research will focus on economic, social and cultural rights, in the fields of international (UN) human rights law and regional (European) human rights law. She will also continue to explore new and emerging issues related to human rights law (such as technology and human rights). In addition, she will continue her research in the fields of disability law and non-discrimination law.
