Prof. Olaf Sleijpen appointed to board of De Nederlandsche Bank

Olaf Sleijpen, professor of European Economic Policy at UM, will join the Governing Board of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) on 1 February. Sleijpen is currently division director at DNB. In his new position as a member of the Governing Board, he will be responsible for the Monetary Affairs portfolio, which includes economic policy and research, financial stability, financial markets, payments and statistics.

Sleijpen takes over for Job Swank

Finance Minister Hoekstra nominated Sleijpen on Friday for the appointment by royal decree. Sleijpen will take over the portfolio for Job Swank, who has been unable to perform his duties as a board member since June of last year.

DNB president Klaas Knot: “It is sad that Job Swank is still ill and that it is unclear how long his recovery will take. With Olaf Sleijpen, we are getting someone on our board with a lot of experience and expertise in monetary and economic issues. His wide national and international network and experience at the ECB will contribute to the effectiveness of DNB in ​​the Netherlands and in Europe.”

Background of Prof. Sleijpen

Prof. Sleijpen, who has been the DNB division director for Insurance Supervision since 2018, has a long track record in the financial sector. He has held various management positions, both in the public and private sector, and for the last nine years has worked as division director at DNB. Before that, he held management positions at pension provider APG and pension fund ABP. Between 2001 and 2004, Sleijpen was Wim Duisenberg's advisor at the European Central Bank. Sleijpen studied economics at Maastricht University and obtained a PhD in macro economics at the University of Groningen.
