Navigating between uncertainty and disagreement

Friday, 2 November 2018, Dr. Joop de Kraker, professor of Sustainability Assessment at ICIS, gave his inaugural address. His key message was that to deal effectively with sustainability issues, we need to acknowledge their ‘wicked’ nature, arising from the combination of causal complexity and normative plurality.

In sustainability assessment, wicked problems require us to combine efforts to identify and reduce knowledge uncertainties as well as to clarify and bridge normative disagreements. This may be achieved by engaging stakeholders in a collective experimenting and learning process, for example, in the context of urban labs.
