Irem Apaydin (N.I.)
Irem works as a Teaching Fellow at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) and is particularly involved in tutoring Quantitative Methods courses. She is a part of the Global Studies Teaching Fellows, where her main teaching duties are. She also takes on the role of mentor and thesis supervisor for GS students.
Overall, Irem is interested in gender economics, youth development and active citizenship. She is the coordinator of Gendered Economics course in Maastricht Summer School 2024.
Expertises
As per her educational background, Irem obtained her Bachelor of Arts from University College Utrecht, where she studied Economics and Earth & Environment. Her Bachelor Thesis focused on how government policies can increase female labour force participation rates in middle income countries.
After her Bachelor, Irem pursued a double MSc. in Public Policy and Human Development (MPP) from Maastricht University and UNU-MERIT, where she combined the Governance of Innovation and Foreign Policy & Development specialisations. In her graduate thesis, Irem built on the intersection of these specialisations further by exploring the impact of gender on automation vulnerability in Kenya with a quantitative analysis using STEP Skills Survey. She is still involved with the MPP program as an alumni mentor, where she helps the personal and professional development of current students.
In addition to her role at FASoS, Irem tutors Introduction to Impact Evaluation of Policies and Programs, and Impact Evaluation of Policies and Programs: Estimation and Analysis of Causal Impacts online courses for United Nations University- Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT) since 2023. Outside of academia, she is an active member of the European Youth Parliament and the Peer Educator of Understanding Europe Turkiye as a volunteer.
Career history
Before joining FASoS, Irem worked as a Junior Lecturer/ Teacher for the Foundation Programme for the 2023-2024 academic year and as a Education Research Officer at School of Business Economics/ UNU-MERIT for the 2022-2023 academic year. In both of these roles, she took on the portfolio of social safety for the students in addition to teaching responsibilities.
