Dr. Bogaard specializes in legal psychology with a focus on investigative interviewing and credibility assessment. Her research explores verbal and non-verbal cues to detection, individual differences in credibility assessment, and the application of psychological insights to improve real-world investigative practices.

Career history

Dr. Bogaard is an Assistant Professor in Legal Psychology at Maastricht University. 

 

She studied Psychology at Maastricht University (2008) and completed the Master’s programme in Psychology and Law (cum laude, 2009). She obtained her PhD in 2017 with a dissertation on verbal credibility assessment, after which she continued at Maastricht University as a lecturer (2016–2018) and Assistant Professor (since 2018).

 

Her research focuses on investigative interviewing and credibility assessment in legal contexts. She examines verbal and non-verbal indicators of deception, individual differences in credibility judgments, and the conditions under which lie detection can be improved at the individual case level. Her work emphasizes the development and empirical testing of evidence-based interviewing protocols, including approaches such as comparable truth baselines and model statement techniques. Her research has been supported by competitive funding, including an NWO VENI grant and an NWO XS grant, as well as other funding initiatives.

 

In addition to her research, Dr. Bogaard serves as Chair of the Board of Examiners for Master’s programmes and is a member of the faculty AI workgroup, contributing to policy and educational innovation.
