Modernising legal education in Indonesia
The Faculties of Law of Airlangga University in Surabaya and Maastricht University, along with the Maastricht School of Management (MSM), collaborated on the important mission of strengthening skills, ethics, and integrity in Indonesian legal education.
The aim was to improve and strengthen legal education and the skills of law graduates, with a strong focus on questions of the rule of law, good governance, and ethics.
The project was successful in improving the efficiency in organisation, education management and quality assurance of the faculties. It also helped to improve the skills of the teaching staff by training them in Problem-Based Learning (PBL), a practice-oriented approach to teaching law that includes interactive, student-centred teaching methods like webinars and seminars. The curriculum was significantly improved and several new courses and in-class moot courts were added.
The group also helped set up a network of legal education providers focused on actively modernising law curricula nationwide, including educational hubs in Java and universities in the Indonesian periphery. Among other initiatives, this network will host a national moot court competition and an interactive online platform to disseminate relevant news and to stimulate discussion and debate.
Building a strong focus on legal ethics, the rule of law, good governance, and integrity of legal professionals as an inherent part of the university law curriculum is a direct investment in the full implementation of the rule of law in the future.
