Ambassador Ammar Hijazi on Palestine and International Law
On 30 October, the Faculty had the pleasure of hosting Ambassador Ammar Hijazi, Head of the Palestinian Mission to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, for an Ambassador Lecture entitled “Charting the State of Palestine’s Legal and Diplomatic Efforts for Self-Determination.”
Ambassador Hijazi was warmly welcomed to the Faculty by the Dean. The event attracted a full audience in the Statenzaal, with lively and thoughtful participation from the public.
In his lecture, Ambassador Hijazi argued that Palestine serves as a litmus test for international law. He situated the question of Palestine within the framework of international law and reflected on the State of Palestine’s pursuit of self-determination through legal and diplomatic efforts in various international fora — including the United Nations, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and other international organizations — while also addressing the challenges these efforts continue to face.
The Ambassador Lecture Series, convened by Dr Fabián Raimondo under the auspices of the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights, continues to provide a platform for dialogue between the diplomatic and academic communities on pressing issues of international concern.
