Kaatje Lomme, alumna BA Arts and Culture

When I was in my last year of secondary school I visited a number of universities. As my brother had studied Arts and Culture at Maastricht University and was very positive about it I decided to visit the open day.

I had never been to Maastricht before and really liked the city and the university. I also felt the PBL system really suited me so decided to start my degree in Arts and Culture in Maastricht.
In the 3rd year of my BA I completed an internship in Museum Dr Guislain (museum on the history of psychiatry) in Gent, Belgium. As I was really interested in this subject I went on to a Masters degree in Social and Cultural History of Medicine in Dublin. After graduating here I moved to London where I’ve been working in various jobs in health research since.
In my current job I work with R&D departments in hospitals across London and encourage them to optimise their processes and use innovative IT systems to enable them to do so. This requires a lot of problem solving and critical thinking, both skills I developed during my time at Maastricht University. It also requires leadership skills, something which the PBL system helps you to build. Finally, having majored in Cultures of Knowledge and Technology, I’m aware of the socio-cultural history of innovation. I’m able to put my work into context which helps me challenge colleagues who want to rush into ‘innovative’ things for the sake of newness and question whether the suggested innovation really is necessarily an improvement.
