Interview with Noemi Meloni, Student ambassador Research Master European Studies
Why did you choose to do a research master’s in European Studies in Maastricht?
“I chose to do a research master’s in European Studies in Maastricht because of its international environment and strong focus on EU-related matters. I loved the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) system during my bachelor’s here and wanted to continue with it. The programme is highly specialised, offering unique preparation in this niche field of political science. Through this programme, I also hope to gain a clearer idea of the kind of research I want to pursue, as well as more exposure to the job market through an internship or study abroad opportunity.”
What do you enjoy most about your studies?
“What I enjoy most about my studies is how professors treat us as their peers, rather than just students. We are trained as researchers from the very start, and there’s no strong hierarchy between us and the professors. I also enjoy being part of the research community, for example, attending faculty colloquiums with established researchers. It’s an invaluable opportunity to immerse myself in the world of research and really get a sense of what it’s like to be a part of it.”
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“In five years, I see myself continuing within research, possibly working for a university or research institute. However, I’m also considering the private sector, where I could apply my research expertise in a more practical environment. I’m still figuring out my path, but I feel drawn towards research related to security and defence in international relations, particularly the European Union’s role on the global stage.”
How do you like living in Maastricht?
“I really like living in Maastricht because it’s both big enough to have all facilities but small enough to feel like home very quickly. It’s easy to run into people you’ve met in lectures or around the city, which gives it a very friendly, familiar atmosphere. It really feels like I’ve been here much longer than I have!”
