"Self-regulation of the Motivation to Learn"

This dissertation explores how higher education students self-regulate their motivation to learn. It found that the strategies students usually use may not fully align with their actual motivation. The research suggests that there's a need for new and improved strategies. The dissertation takes a closer look at motivation, treating it like a complex system with many elements. Four separate studies investigate how different aspects of motivation are connected, why students with different motivations use strategies differently, how long-term changes in motivation happen, and what strategies students use when facing motivational problems in real-time. Surprisingly, students facing motivation challenges only sometimes think about using any strategies. There seems to be more to effective motivational self-regulation than mere knowledge of the strategies or using them. Rather, self-regulation of motivation to learn is a complex problem that students should learn to solve.
