PAS Festival 2021

PAS Festival 2021

Summer tunes, inspiring lectures, circus, street theatre and art. Studium Generale's Pleasure, Art & Science Festival is unstoppable! On 3 and 4 September 2021, PAS will transform the Tapijnkazerne into an exciting festival site, where arts and science make for interesting contrasts. The academic year does not open in lecture halls, but with bands such as Luwten and Antwerp Gipsy-Ska Orchestra, and brilliant speakers. From podcast to clown, with various stages there is always something new to discover. Let it surprise you!

Admission to PAS is completely free, for everyone. Reservations can be made from 15 July via the website: www.pasmaastricht.nl.

Opening Night: Friday 3 September, 20:00 – 22:00

The PAS Festival traditionally opens with an opening speech by Martin Paul, President of Maastricht University, followed by a piece in which theatre maker Jan van den Berg brings together theatre and science in a special way. Then our headliner: get ready to enjoy an hour-long concert by the up and coming band Luwten, from the Dutch Tessa Douwstra, whose second album Draft was recently released after an acclaimed debut.

Saturday, 4 September, 15:00 – 24:00

Unlike previous years, Studium Generale has chosen to work with time blocks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Reservations can be made per block. In addition, there is an continious programme on the grounds of the Tapijn Barracks in Maastricht. The festival terrain and stages are designed in such a way that 1.5 metres distance can be held.

Music
The big Main Stage will be transformed into the PAS music stage on Saturday, with acts such as the Utrecht socially engaged indie band The Maureens, singer-songwriter Eli Goffa and the exciting Antwerp Gypsy-Ska Orkestra.
The day starts with a fun programme for all ages at the nearby Tent Stage: circus act MIKMAK and contortionist Barto. In the evening, the musicians are taking over: think of Baghi, whose EP Sunshine's Got The Blues was released last month, or the band Dareyn that breathes new life into the mystical sound of the kemençe.

Lectures
PAS welcomes some twenty fascinating scientists to the Main Building, who will give short 30-minute lectures on topics that move them. For example, Head of Transplantation Immunology at UMC+ Lotte Wieten, PhD, talks about the pioneering Nobel Prize-awarded cancer treatment: immunotherapy. Questions will also be answered during the lectures, such as: 'Is banning plastic the solution to the plastic waste problem?' and 'What can the dodo teach us about extinction?' Finally, scientists and artists will talk to each other during the PAS Talkshow (in Dutch), in collaboration with the Edmond Hustinx Foundation.

Kaleido Stage, Tapijn Garden and Specials|
On the Kaleido stage, Kaleido, the organization for international students, is joining forces with Stadsnomade Maastricht. There is a stage with music, spoken word and stand-up comedy, a skate ramp with workshops for children and teens, and a live street art wall. The Tapijn Garden flourishes with treasure hunts, tours and presentations, and all kinds of ongoing specials take place throughout the site, such as the installation Moment For Yourself by Keigoed, where you can literally retreat under mother’s skirt.
