Environmental Law lecture
The Faculty of Law Environmental Lecture Series brings together experts, researchers, and professionals to discuss current issues relating to the environment, sustainability, and the law. Each edition offers a fresh perspective, featuring a different speaker and focusing on a unique theme.
The upcoming lecture will take place on Monday 18 May at 15:00 at the Faculty of Law. The session, titled “When Tax Systems Undermine Sustainability and Public Revenue: Corruption and Abuse in Focus”, will be delivered by Esperanza Buitrago Diaz.
ABSTRACT
Tax systems play a fundamental role in revenue collection, redistribution, and regulation, forming the economic foundation for public policy and sustainable societies. However, they have at times also facilitated abusive profit shifting and contributed to sustaining corruption. Historically, certain states even allowed the deductibility of bribes, indirectly enabling practices that erode public revenues. In addition, high-ranking public officials have been involved in corruption and tax-related scandals across both developed and developing countries, further undermining public trust. Against this backdrop, the lecture explores whether sustainability should be reconsidered through the lens of trust in taxation and governance.
