Radio Nuclides Laboratory (RNL)
The Radio Nuclides Laboratory (RNL) is a central research facility and part of Maastricht University’s (UM) laboratories. The RNL is equipped for work involving ionizing radiation, allowing researchers from all departments and institutes with a license under the Nuclear Energy Law to safely perform their experiments.
Collaboration with Maastro en MUMC+
The RNL collaborates with various Randwyck institutes (UM, MUMC+, and MAASTRO) in the field of tracer development. The expansion of RNL’s equipment with imaging techniques such as PET, CT, and SPECT-PET encourages scientific researchers to perform advanced imaging studies in Maastricht.
In the near future, the RNL’s laboratory animal facilities will become part of the Biomedical Centre (BMC), as animal research remains essential for translating fundamental research into safe clinical applications

Education
The RNL plays an active role in education: practical lessons are provided for the ‘TMS-VRS level D’ course, which aims to teach employees and students how to work safely with radioactive sources. Practical sessions are also offered for the ‘SMS-R’ course, ensuring that medical specialists learn how to use X-ray equipment safely. Every two years, a completely new refresher course program is offered to all RNL users to maintain their knowledge and skills.
Upon request, training and instructions are provided for students and staff.

Collection, Processing and Storage of Radioactive Waste
Radioactive waste is generated at multiple locations on the 'Randwyck' campus. The collection, storage and transfer of radioactive substances are subject to legal regulations. To ensure a controlled environment and proper waste management, the Randwyck campus is equipped with one central waste facility, which is managed by the RNL department.
