Dr Anke Moerland (A.)
Anke Moerland is Assistant Professor of Intellectual Property Law in the European and International Law Department, Maastricht University. She holds a PhD on Intellectual property protection in EU bilateral trade agreements from Maastricht University. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Technical University Dresden, Germany (2005), a bachelor’s degree (cum laude) in Dutch Law from Maastricht University (2011) and a LLM degree (cum laude) from the Magister Juris Communis Programme from Maastricht University (2006).
Anke has published on IP law and policy. Since 2018, she holds a visiting professorship at Queen Mary University of London on Intellectual Property Law, Governance and Art. Since 2017, Anke coordinates the EIPIN Innovation Society, a 4-year Horizon 2020 grant under the Marie Skłodowska Curie Action ITN-EJD.

Professional career history
Anke Moerland is Assistant Professor of Intellectual Property Law in the European and International Law Department, Maastricht University. Since 2018, Anke also holds a visiting professorship at Queen Mary University of London in Intellectual Property Law, Governance and Art. She holds a PhD from Maastricht University, which she defended in October 2013 on the topic “Why Jamaica Wants to Protect Champagne: Intellectual Property Protection in EU Bilateral Trade Agreements”. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Technical University Dresden, Germany, a bachelor’s degree (cum laude) in Dutch Law from Maastricht University and a LLM degree (cum laude) from the Magister Juris Communis Programme from Maastricht University.
Anke’s main area of interest relates to the interface of intellectual property law and political science. In this regard, her research focusses on governance aspects of intellectual property regulation, in particular the protection of geographical indications, the negotiation settings of IP chapters free trade agreements from an international relations point of view and the external relations of the EU in relation to intellectual property protection and enforcement in third countries. Since 2017, Anke coordinates the EIPIN Innovation Society, a 4-year Horizon 2020 grant under the Marie Skłodowska Curie Action ITN-EJD. Since 2014, she coordinates the TEMPUS project Promoting Intellectual Property Law Studies in the Mediterranean Region (IP-MED).
Anke is a member of the Institute on Globalization and International Regulation, and is closely involved in the advanced master programmes Intellectual Property and Knowledge Management (IPKM LLM/MSc). She coordinates the PhD programme and Master’s Honours Research Track of the Graduate School of Law of Maastricht University and acts as chair of the IPKM Examination Board. She is also a guest lecturer at Iustinianus Primus Law Faculty, Skopje, Fyrom.
Anke teaches Global Policy and Economics of IP Law, Principles of International Intellectual and Industrial Property Law, Law of Trade Marks and Unfair Competition and Legal English and Methodology in the IPKM programme. She is also involved in the teaching of Intellectual Property Law for master students of the Faculty of Law as well as at the Maastricht School of Governance.
