S.H. van Rijt
Sabine van Rijt’s research aims to apply multifunctional nanoparticles in regenerative medicine. In particular, she aims to design and synthesize functionalized nanoparticles for imaging, site specific drug delivery, and controlled release purposes. The ability to modify specific features of physical, chemical and/or biological properties of, for example, stem cells opens the way to manipulate their actions in biomedical applications. She also aims to apply these nanoparticles for synergistic approaches to create “smart” instructive synthetic biomaterials for tissue and organ regeneration.
Sabine van Rijt studied Chemistry, specializing in inorganic and organic chemistry, at Leiden University where she received her MSc. in 2006. She then moved to the UK to do her PhD in the group of Prof. Peter Sadler (Warwick University) working on the synthesis and application of anti-cancer organometallic complexes. After her PhD, she received the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt grant to do a postdoctoral fellowship at the Helmholtz Zentrum Munich (Germany). During this time she set-up her own research line working on the application of multifunctional nanoparticles for lung therapy. In her free time, Sabine likes to go hiking, travelling and meet with family and friends. In April 2016 she joined MERLN as an assistant professor.
