Dr Mr Roland Moerland (C.A.R.)
Roland Moerland is Assistant Professor of Criminology at Maastricht University. He publishes, lectures and supervises bachelor, master and PhD students in the fields of Supranational and Organizational criminology. In his research he focuses on gross human rights violations and state (corporate) crime. In addition to this general research interest, he has a special interest in how processes of denial facilitate the perpetration of such crimes.
Roland Moerland is a Board Member of the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights and in this position, he is co-responsible for the organization of the Centre which facilitates and supports research in the field of human rights at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law by organizing research projects, conferences, seminars and lectures, etc.
Roland Moerland is a member of the International Association of Genocide Scholars and he serves as an editor on the editorial board of Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal.
Roland Moerland is also a member of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University.
Roland Moerland his general expertise lies in the fields of Supranational and Organizational Criminology. Supranational Criminology encompasses the criminological study of international crimes, such as genocide and other gross human rights violations. Organizational Criminology entails the criminological study of state (-corporate) and governmental crime.
Roland Moerland's specific research interests include: Genocide; Language and discourse of violence; Genocide denial and the role of denial in the process of genocide more generally; Organizational/institutional criminogenic environments; Gender based violence; Transitional justice; Comparative case study analysis.
Professional career history
Roland Moerland obtained his Ph.D. in Criminology from Maastricht University, where currently also holds a position as an Assistant Professor. He lectures at the University College Maastricht, which is a liberal arts bachelor program. Roland Moerland furthermore holds a Master’s Degree in Criminal Law from Maastricht University, the Netherlands, and a Master’s Degree in Criminology from the University of Sydney, Australia.
