As a PhD candidate you carry out your research within one

You participate in one of the faculty’s research institutes and most PhD candidates
participate in the Ius Commune Research School.

Being a member of an institute and the faculty as a whole means that you have access to 
large international research networks in which of the faculty participates. You can easily
reach out to individual scholars and build up a network of your own.
