Shuyuan Zhang (S.)

Shuyuan ZHANG is a PhD candidate at the Department of International and European Law, Faculty of Law, Maastricht University.

She received her first master's degree in Civil and Commercial Law from China University of Political Science and Law (July 2021) and her second master’s degree in European and International Law (LLM) from the University of Hamburg (July 2021). During her master's study, she attended several moot court competitions and completed an internship at UNCITRAL-RCAP.

In the meanwhile, she completed the Human Rights Master Program at the Peking University Law School, which is a cooperation with Lund University, Sweden (March 2021). Inspired by this experience, she found her interest in international human rights law and interdisciplinary methodology.

Her doctoral thesis is to study Asian states' discourse and implementation of the universality of human rights. Four countries were selected for this comparative study: Singapore, Malaysia, India, and the Philippines. Empirical research will be conducted at the level of the international human rights normative system and the domestic legal system. 

She is a member of the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights and the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Researchers.
